DIVINE MEDITATION II : The Divine Names and Their Power

Discovering how meditation aligns the soul with God's Divine Attributes.

Dear Ones,

The Names of God in the Baha’i Calendar — Splendour, Glory, Beauty, among others — radiate the essence of divine attributes and awaken the soul’s spiritual potential. The revealed verses reflect this truth by invoking the manifold Names of God, shedding their healing light on the seeking heart:

O God, my God! I testify to Thy unity and to Thy oneness. I beseech Thee, O Thou Possessor of names and Fashioner of the heavens, by the pervasive influence of Thine exalted Word and the potency of Thy supreme Pen, to aid me with the ensigns of Thy power and might...

- Baha’u’llah
This truth shines also in the prescribed recitation of the Greatest Name, Allah-u-Abha, ninety-five times a day:
Meditate upon the Most Great Name, Whose splendor hath shone forth above the horizon of glory, that thou mayest apprehend the majesty of this Name and the power of His might, whereby the oceans of wisdom surge and the rivers of mercy flow.

- Baha’u’llah

Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha’i Faith, illuminates this path:

Splendour, Glory, Beauty, Grandeur, Light, Mercy, Words, Perfection, Names, Might, Will, Knowledge, Power, Speech, Questions, Honour, Sovereignty, Dominion, and Loftiness. Meditating upon these sublime attributes, man is enabled to gaze beyond the curve of time, wherein the swing and change of planetary movements exists, to the eternal qualities that stabilize the soul.

Unlike structured methods found in certain traditions, such as yoga or other mystical practices, Baha’i meditation emphasises personal reflection upon the words of God, without overly rigid prescriptions. In essence, it is a  contemplative inquiry into a single point — such as a Divine Name, a question, or a spiritual concept — in order to grasp its depth, setting aside verbal reasoning. Once the spirit is freed from discursive thought, spiritual illumination follows: intuition unveils sacred truth, and the will, thus illumined, aligns the soul with its true calling.

...whatever I behold I readily discover that it maketh Thee known unto me, and it remindeth me of Thy signs, and of Thy tokens, and of Thy testimonies.

- Baha'u'llah

Seize this sacred chance. Learn the five steps to forge a quick and deep bond with God. Look forward to DIVINE MEDITATION III.

Be wonderfully blessed!
