As if tainted with the blood of martyrs,
Iran's Azadi Tower (Tower of Freedom) glows crimson in the night.
Designed by the Baha'i architect Hossein Amanat.
Dear Ones,
Take heart!
The future of Iran is of the utmost greatness, majesty, and glory, for it is the native land of the Blessed Beauty [Bahá’u’lláh]. All the nations of the earth will turn to Iran and regard it with high esteem. Know with certainty that it will make such progress as to dazzle the eyes of the mighty and the learned throughout the world.
- Abdu’l-Baha
This vision gently invites us to reflect on the recent historical stages of this long martyrdom, so that we may draw from them their deepest lessons.
Without lingering on political details that would take us away from the heart of the matter, it is widely known that after decades of widespread popular discontent against the Pahlavi monarchy, Ruhollah Khomeini rose to power in 1979 after only a few intense weeks of revolution. The Ayatollah emerged as a unifying and providential figure, borne along by hopes that were at once social, economic, national and religious. Yet his theocratic vision, centered on the application of sharia soon prevailed over the early democratic aspirations.
Sharia is an Arabic word that literally means “the way”, “the path”. In the Islamic context it refers to the path prescribed by God for believers — the body of divine directives guiding a moral, spiritual and social life in harmony with divine will.
In the Qur’an the word “sharia” (or its derived forms) appears only four times, always in the sense of a prescribed path or way — never as a detailed legal code or complete legal system as we often understand it today. Those verses all emphasize unity at the core of faith (monotheism, justice, good deeds), without any imposed sectarian or dogmatic division. It is a call to spiritual cohesion. Surah 42, verse 13:
He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus – to establish the religion and not be divided therein.
In 2026 Iran is an Islamic Republic founded on its 1979 Constitution (revised in 1989), under the leadership of the Supreme Leader (Ali Khamenei since 1989). It is therefore a republic with elections, yet one in which the highest religious authority holds a central place. To understand without going beyond what is necessary, here is what the relevant articles state:
According to Article 5, during the Occultation of the Hidden Imam, the guardianship and leadership of the community return to the just and pious Islamic jurist who fulfils the required conditions.
Article 107 entrusts the Assembly of Experts, elected by the people, with the task of appointing this jurist.
Article 109 lists the essential qualifications: scholarship in Islamic jurisprudence sufficient to issue religious opinions, justice and piety, political and social insight, courage and administrative capacity.
These provisions place the Supreme Leader in a position of religious and political responsibility during the absence of the Hidden Imam, making the regime the interpreter of divine commandments as understood in this tradition. This understanding, specific to Twelver Shia theology, underpins the current system. The underlying doctrinal reality deserves careful attention.
With growing access to information, many Iranians today aspire to an open and peaceful spirituality — values at the heart of Baha’í teachings: the oneness of humanity, equality of men and women, universal education, harmony of science and religion, elimination of prejudice, social justice without violence. Iran, cradle of the Cause, is therefore promised a future in which these ideals will no longer remain abstract: they will be embodied in a just, admired society, where power returns to the people and where spiritual glory surpasses all that has come before.
Erelong will the state of affairs within thee be changed, and the reins of power fall into the hands of the people… The day is approaching when thy agitation will have been transmuted into peace and quiet calm.
This illustrious destiny depending on inner recognition of the Cause and moral transformation, it confers deep meaning upon the present trials, seen as preparations for Iran’s further participation in the descent of the NEW JERUSALEM.
